Assuming you're using Audacity 2.1.3 or higher. We have a (new) pre-baked tool called RMS Normalize that can directly set RMS. I think it's still true that Audacity doesn't do anything in real time past stop, start and some timer jobs.

We know what many common errors sound like and this isn't any of them. That and it's so badly distorted we can't work it back using guesswork. And we're trying to do this across multiple time zones.

We do very well, but we don't solve all problems. Is there someone there who can help?

You should be creating WAV files of your work anyway. Audacity Projects can be brittle and as above, only open in Audacity.

In mastering, there is another consideration. Check your work on the sound system most likely to be used by the client and customer. But I don't think I would actually master like that. Make sure you're not starting to fill up your drive. I've gotten speed increases on my WIn7 machine by forcing it to do extra drive optimization. I don't remember the particulars of how to do that. It's been a while. If you have never done that it can take some time and may need multiple passes. Koz
