Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
Correct. That's a Behringer UM2 preamp. It adapts a full-on XLR analog microphone to USB. It supplies 48 volt phantom power (if needed) and may be used for monitoring as well as "Perfect Overdubbing" with a built-in headphone mixer. It natively mounts mono which is perfect for Voice-Over a...

Re: Logitech USB H390 headset with Mac 10.12.6 Sierra
Logitech H390 USB headset. The H390 has a very aggressive noise-cancelling microphone. That looks like the one I have. I stopped using it because of low volume and ratty voice quality. But it did cancel room noise. You can use the Audacity tools to boost the volume in post production (Amplify, Norm...

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
I've been keeping the laptop just outside the closet door on a stand That's one of the home recording conflicts. Keep the noisy computer out of your recording room and watch the screen and don't put the computer more than one USB cable away from the microphone. It's not an accident that quiet Macs ...

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
One happy accident of the mastering suite was the ability of the tools to gracefully adjust for minor variations in voice volume. If you have "golden ears" and are really paying attention, you might be able to find one phrase I voiced a bit louder than the others. But it will probably slid...

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
You don't have to guess at it. You can make the Audacity sound meters larger so you can see them as you record (like the recording engineer would be doing). http://www.kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/AudacityRecording-650w.jpg That's my standard meter setup. Note on the left, it's not -60 or -72, but -9...

Re: Audacity should control full audio board capabilities
That sounds like an interface development team. I mean one separate from the actual program. I agree it needs work. I think a majority of posted problems on the forum are for interface. "I can't hear my playback," "My microphone doesn't work," How do I plug in my turntable?"...

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
There may be a mistake there. I'm juggling too many Audacity windows.
Still, do you apply any filters or equalizers (beside Low Rolloff)?

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
Fascinating. I processed your submitted raw WAV and converted to MP3 submission standard. That room tone after the introduction came in with multiple different techniques at -73.6dB. Well within standards. No noise reduction. The same patch on your MP3 posting arrives at -69dB, some 5-1/2 dB louder ...

Re: AudioBook Mastering version 4
I want to inspect and listen to the raw clip when I get home. Noise is a little magic. That's why I left it to last in the correction suite. Noise has pages of explanation and notes all on its own. If your work is right on the edge—most home-style microphones work this way—just leaning back during t...

It divides both tracks in half so they don't overload and then just smashes them together—adds them up. If they're identical, you'll get one single blue wave at identical volume.
