Import your tracks and they will stack top to bottom and all try to play at once. Tracks > Align Tracks > Align End to End. You may have a sound file that Audacity doesn't recognize. Install the FFMpeg add-on software and see if that helps. Scroll down. http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/ This is also the place you should get Audacity 2.1.3. Many tools stop working if you're not in this Audacity version or late...

You can also work a shotgun microphone as hand-held. That's not cheap, either. I got a pix of that somewhere.
