And, as above, if that's the case, defeating the gate will not make the noise go away. It will probably leave the noise there all the time (which may be less of a problem than the pulsing).

As above, a vinyl pop or click is not going to change to your ear if it's distorted or not. You only get in trouble if actual music does that. So this may be a non-issue.

Have you noticed any condition that makes the Missing Stop Key more likely? I did it with simple, short sound clips, so it's possible to do multiple passes until I hit something.
