Re: Do red lines always mean clipping?
A high value in either direction will trigger the red bars. In the outside world—outside of Audacity—those are the two places where the digital system "runs out of numbers" and stops following the performance. The damage can be really tiny, fast and high pitched, so if you're old enough to...

Re: Average amplitude?
We can give it to you as RMS. Equivalent horsepower or the area under the wave.
Analyse > Contrast > Measure Selection (write it down) > Close.
The value sticks, so make sure to Measure Selection every time you use it.

Re: vocal removal using 2.2.1
All that and there's no guarantee it's going to work. There's a long list of conditions that will cause Vocal Removal to fail, and it does fail a lot of the time. Some really odd things like someone added stereo reverb to the main singer, The singer goes but the reverb stays around. That's what happ...

Re: Background noise ok?
What kind of light editing? Did you go in between sentences and manually suppress the hum? There's easier ways to do that. Sometimes you can apply Effect > Noise Reduction or even a notch filter depending on the pitch of the tone. Give us a hint. When you post for inspection, you should do it with t...

I applied the audiobook mastering tools and the clip passes ACX Audiobook requirements. You could read an audiobook if you wanted to. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=96103 You have the slightest P Popping from being too close to the microphone. Do you use a pop and blast filte...

Re: USB connected mic to Audacity for MAC
I can hear your wet mouth noises That's fascinating. I don't think I've ever heard little musical tick noises like that. They don't respond to the DeEsser and DeClicker tools (that I can see). There are odd tricks you can do with Noise Reduction but that doesn't seem to help either. There's an almo...

to specify accurate noise control solutions. There are conditions where flat analysis is handy and they're not obvious. Many USB microphones generate their own very low frequency noise and trash independent of that's going on In Real Life. I'm guessing the makers say: nobody can hear it, so why bot...

Re: Overdubbing - cracking and popping noises
I create a rhythm/click track on Audacity. It is strongly recommended you make a straight, simple, plain recording with your live system before you set up for overdubbing. I'm betting your system will not pass simple recording. If you do get a clean recording, then the next most likely problem is s...
