Re: How to record to external device?
Which Olympus? a natively recorded mp3 file on the Olympus gives more options with regards to what one can do with the file. Such as? This pathway is not recommended because no matter what you do, you will be double compressing the MP3 and doubling the sound damage. It's one of the reasons we strong...

Re: Newbie with urgent need for help!
Yes, totally. That's the reason you're using WAV instead of MP3. You can also Save the work as an Audacity Project. If you do that, you can open up the show exactly where you left it with all the tracks intact. Note Projects do not save UNDO. So once you do that and close Audacity, you can't go back...

Re: Can't record through Audio Interface
Are you overdubbing—playing music to yourself or to a backing track?
Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording.
Do you have Overdubbing selected?

Re: Only one sound wave level
This is a good choice for single microphone recording either spoken word or playing a musical instrument. If you buy a higher end stereo interface (two 3-pin XLR connectors), there's no such thing as simple mono recording. You can't ever record to the right (bottom channel) and if you force mono, it...

Re: Only one sound wave level
Right. So it should be possible to set Audacity to record Mono. That will turn out to be one blue soundwave which will play to both sides of your headphones. It should say Mono on the info panel on the left. In the sound settings, upper panel next to the microphone symbol, select the interface name ...

Re: Mid-way project crashing.
There's another one of these I haven't thought about in a long time. Do you use Quick Start? Nobody liked it when Windows took forever to start, so Microsoft made it snappy by not checking everything. One of things it stopped checking is memory. You might look for start up preferences. Also, when yo...

Re: Mid-way project crashing.
I know I'm the only one who does this, but your symptoms map perfectly to "running out of computer." Are you running out of space on your drives? Doesn't have to be the drive running Audacity, either. If any drive connected to the computer is running out of resources, it can cause real-tim...

That was a hint for you to tell us what the interface is. If you do that, we may be able to tell you best practices for using it.I only have one mic input (3 pin) on my USB interface,

Yes. Nobody is expecting screamed dialog to sound like anything anyway, so you win.
It's not often somebody comes up with a trick I haven't heard of.
