The Intel Speedstep problem is apparently a known issue in other circles.
It regulates the CPU clock and voltage to save power when it thinks the CPU is not busy. This plays havoc with the audio sampling causing all sorts of issues.

I am trying to record my first LP with this but having difficulties. After several minutes I get distortion in the signal. If I stop and start the Audacity recorder it goes away for a while.
