Hey WC -- thanks a lot! That worked. I suspect the program had gotten itself wedged somehow because today when I started up again, everything works as expected, including the selection/cut operation. Live and learn! Thanks for your reply.

While recording my first album, I went off to do something else and forgot about it. The music stopped but Audacity kept recording. I have about a half hour of silence that I want to delete.
