Re: Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
OK, that makes sense to me. So I guess if I wanted true "masters" I'd make and keep the 32bit "aup" files, and bite the bullet on disk space. Since I'm not doing that...using the lossless WAV files as masters probably gives me as much as using the 16-bit aup files would. Yes?

Re: Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
Thanks, WC. I'm not entirely sure what using 32-bit buys in this case. Extra headroom? But doesn't 16-bit cover the entire dynamic range of LP, cassette, and CD, so that the headroom is a moot point unless your source is live audio, or DVD-grade audio?

Re: Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
Huh. Well, if WAV is god enough to keep as the "master"....you've just doubled my hard drive space.
Crystal ball parts? No problem, ask any steampunk, there's bound to be one nearby with suitable spares.<G>

Re: Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
Koz, use a little telepathy like everyone else, wouldya?<G>
When I said the AUP files, I meant all of Audacity's files, including the data files that the AUP files work from/with.
So, if I really need to rephrase the question? Wav are enough? Or keep the AUP and data files as well, for any reason?

Re: Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
Very interesting, Gale. Previously I'd only heard people say that using 32-bit was excessive and wasted when the source material was CD-quality or less. Some of these tapes are close to CD quality--but they're still a bit less.

Generation Loss in AUP to WAV to Aup to Wav?
I'm recording my AUP files from high end cassette, and using 16-bit 44k "CD" quality for the recordings. My intentions were to keep the AUP files as masters, then burn off lossless WAV files (fome home listening) and VBR MP# files for portable listening. And then it struck me, is there any reason to...

With occasional problems, but yes, it works well enough to do what it has to.

Re: Gentlest way to squeeze a CD?
Thanks, guys. I pulled the WAV files into Roxio instead of WMP, and Roxio said I'd need a 2:13 overburn--but wouldn't quite allow one that large. So I started some merciless intertrack clipping...and by the time I got done, Roxio now says there's a full 1:16 of free space when the job runs. With no ...

Re: Gentlest way to squeeze a CD?
Steve- "The only way to get 777MB onto one CD is to use a high capacity CD" I do understand, that was poorly phrased of me. I'm looking for a way to reduce the size of the audio files so that there will be only 650MB of data. I know the same album, with supposedly the same song versions and cuts, ha...

Re: Gentlest way to squeeze a CD?
Sorry, Koz, no compris.
Are you saying, go to 22K sampling rate? Or, what precisely?
Overstocked on old 650MB CD's. just as soon burn it off to a couple of them (backup) as use the good new stuff.
