Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
Thanks, WC. This is called "hide the crates and spinners" and move it all to digital, so as time allows I do bits and pieces of that and I suspect the final archive will be 500GB to 1TB in size, sticking to the WAV format. I'm looking around slowly so whatever answer I do come down to will lat a whi...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
Steve, the Brennan is certainly interesting but I'm also not interested in throwing out the old stereo, a Sansui AU-919 that (knock wood) seems built like a tank. And at about 55 lbs. is about as easy to transport.<G> http://www.sansui.us/AU-919.htm I suspect that if I moved the speakers close toget...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
"Trying to modify an iPod could lead to an expensive accident" Ayup. I don't have to use WAV files, I could keep the archive in WAV and keep a duplicate in MP3 or other format for playing. Right now I'm just sticking to WAV to build the archive files, and until I give my ears some serious a/b compar...

Re: 16 v 24 bit noise floor
Yup. Crystal now. IOW if I had a 24-bit sound card (which I don't) and I piped in the analog audio form my LPs or tapes, right now I'd only get 16-bit approximations of the analog signal. Full of rounding errors and crudely done, some would say.<G> But once the new code comes, if I got a 24-bit soun...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
"but you have to do that or stop overconstraining the problem" Since I consider the problem "adequately constrained" and not overconstrained, maybe I really do want to do that.<G> I think Apple actually discontinued the 160gb iPod for a while, then brought it back very reluctantly. After all it uses...

Re: File formats & data loss?
OH! OH OH OH! GOT IT! The data coming in is limited to 16 bit (for now) so there's a bottleneck IF your hardware or source can support a higher depth. OK, no problem for me right now then since the input is 16-bit at best. I'll stick to 16-16-16 all the way through for "straight" work, and consider ...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
Eh, little Linux box...I'd still need a keyboard (yeah, I've got a spare) and a monitor, but if I want a small LCD monitor...there goes the budget and I can buy a netbook and get a better integrated package for less. Or for a bit more, the Archos5 500GB https://store.archos.com/archos-internet-table...

Re: File formats & data loss?
Well, it was one top-of-the-line newish 500GB laptop drive that came in DOA, replaced under their 48-hour program (which apparently means "one week after our internal delays and a weekend have to get in" with a refurbished drive that apparerntly did not get a qc test. So #2 and again #3 arrived DOA ...

Re: 16 v 24 bit noise floor
OK, Steve, you'vre got me baffled. Are you saying that in Aud 1.2.6 when I set the quality option (in the preferences) for 24 or 32 bit sampling, it will not use more than 16 bits? Or just that it uses the extra bit depth internally but can't...what, can't produce any sound files that maintain that ...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
I know I COULD buy a half dozen CD jukeboxes, but I don't want to do that. I've just broken 250GB of WAV files and there are some 200 tapes, two albums each, to be added. I figure the library will easily hit 500GB and I don't want to start stacking up CD jukeboxes with mechanisms that are likely to ...
