There's actually two places to set. The obvious one is Apple Preferences, then comes Audacity > Preferences > Playback > Device. That still doesn't guarantee that Audacity will recognize and use the data stream, but that's the best you can do with the current software. This is a matter of your wall...

As said, Audacity does not (as standard) work with ASIO, so you need to ensure that your device has supported (non-asio) drivers installed. Then go to "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O" and select the appropriate audio device for Recording and Playback. This is a firewire device, yes? Make sure that ...

1.3.7 crashes on load
Hi everyone,
audacity 1.3.7 is crashing the second I try to load it on my intel macbook, os x 10.4.11. Has anyone else seen this? I can't even get into the app, it just crashes, and I'm only running regular built in audio out.

I have this same problem, I've read elsewhere here on the forum that it's due to ASIO incompatibility - and ASIO is still indeed in effect on OSX. There's gotta be some kind of workaround for this eventually...
