Workaround: I copied the lame library out from the default installation path (/usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib) to my folder /Users/dsmithh/libmp3lame.dylib, repointed the Audacity program to that location, am now exporting MP3 files as needed.

An update. I was able to set the password for root on my mac, and confirm that the libmp3lame.dylib file is in the correct place: /usr/local/lib/audacity/xxxxx

Using MAC OS 10.6.4 and Audacity 1.3.12, I have recorded small snippets of audio to learn how to save files as MP3.
