ok, well the new installation did indeed fix that particular problem... still no idea what was happening but i guess it doesn't matter now! i'll try and familiarise myself with this new version over the next week or so and see how i go. thanks for your help

thanks. but... will i not then have another load of problems? i'm not exactly IT-literate and have therefore resisted downloading beta version so fanything... well, i guess i'll give it a try and see

sorry, i forgot to say that i'm using a laptop running windows 7 - most of my experience with audacity was on a desktop running XP. is this enough explanation in itself, i.e. the OS causes problems with this version of the program, and this just happens to be the first time i've come across one..?
