Maximising did the trick! But as you suggested I installed v 1.3.12 and that launches willingly. Many thanks - brilliant!

secondary failure to launch
Audacity 1.3.x (Beta=], Win XP: Audacity functioned quite satisfactorily for weeks, but suddenly (after I closed a project) the program failed to open from the shortcut. The problem has persisted. Although 'Audacity' appears on the taskbar, in fact with each attempt to open it another 'Audacity' app...
