Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
SteveTheFilddle - Your post got me thinking about some freeware options, although I really don't need them anymore ... Gnome wave cleaner could possibly be installed under Knoppix or Slax (Linux on CD), although I haven't had much luck with that kind of install in the past. Also the author mentions ...

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
I again want to thank everyone for the help I have been receiving on the forum - it is excellent; however, I seem to still always be taking 3 steps forward and 2 back at every turn. (Actually not - I got it worked out, but read on …) I installed Audacity 1.3.7 over my existing 1.3.3 folder. Seemed f...

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
Thanks again - I think I'll upgrade from 1.3.3 to 1.3.7 and play with the repair option, but I'll probably end up using CR for the main conversion.

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
WC - thanks for the great tip on CR. It sounds like it does a great job, but really I only have three cassettes left (and I think only two of them were from vinyl), so $40 is a bit much. I realize I could do all I need within the trial period and I will probably give it a shot anyway. However - just...

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
I have a few more follow-on questions on converting my tapes. First off - the Noise Removal Filter worked great at removing tape hiss. For Dolby, I used two different settings on the different tapes, but I’m pretty happy with the results - essentially, I wasn’t going low enough in the frequency spec...

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
Koz - I understand most of the technical issues that you are getting at. To make a true "filter" to take a Dolby cassette and make it sound correct when going through a non Dolby tape deck into audacity, would require someone to get and interpret exactly what Dolby compression did in the f...

I had to look that up in Wikipedia, but I think that was a complement - if so, Thanks!!!stevethefiddle wrote:Nice bit of lateral thinking

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
Thanks Stevethefiddle!!! What I might try and what might get close to the real time EQ is to play the files back in WMP or some other player with a flat EQ setting, adjust the curve there, and then transfer those settings to the Audacity project file. Unfortunately, in my naivety with this, I saved ...

Re: Improving quality of Poor Tape to CD Conversion
I was hoping someone might have an update to this. I can't get to the kozco.com pages (problem on my end, not his), but ... It seems like if it is just a EQ filter setting, someone could post the settings that work, and it could be provided separately or bundled as a "pseudo Dolby B decompressi...
