I found a partial answer. WAV files have this problem. I exported from Audacity in WAV format. Even though the encoder was set to import Apple lossless, the files stayed in WAV format. I converted all of them in iTunes, and the new files accept artwork. Those downloaded automatically even attach to ...

Newbie here. I managed to create the music files from tapes and import them into iTunes (feeling very pleased!). Now I notice that album artwork is disabled. Did I miss something?
