After telling McAfee to "Disable On-Access Scan" I've noticed the clicking problem goes away at 48,000HZ.
Not sure about the other sample rates.
I'm using a Dell Dimension 9200 with lousy integrated Sigmatel audio with Audacity 1.2.6.
