Thanks Koz. You nailed it.
When I looked at the Sound Blaster control panel, all input was set to Windows default values, resulting in the input selector on the mixer toolbar being grayed out. I can only attribute the switch to gremlins, but all is well now. Thanks again!

could be a lot of things. my crystal ball is cloudy right now so tell us how your system is connected. how you use it. software settings. make model opsys. everything. Version 1.2.4, Windows XL. I've been recording live music from a PA mixer/amp. Having changed nothing since the previous session, I switched on the PA, opened Audacity and hit the "record" button. Flat line. I'm getting the PA on headphones plugged into the computer, so the cables are work...
