I'm respondng to my own posting. I hope this is kosher.
I when into the control panel and removed all the trial media applications that came with my new computer. Windows Media Player now works just fine. I think the application that was keeping me from burning WAV files as CD Audio was Roxio.

I'm pretty new at Audacity myself but something I've noticed is that, when you open a new file, the Record Level Meter -- the slider next to the microphone icon on the Mixer toolbar -- is set all the way to the right, i.e.at full volume.
