Go into Audacity Preferences (Edit > Preferences) and on the Quality tab, change the Default sample format to 16 bit or 32 bit. I suspect that it is on 24 bit and some Macs are known to have problems with 24 bit audio. Yeap, it was set to 24 bit in the preferences. Setting it to 32 bit float worked...

Can we have a bit more detail about the problem. Exactly what kind of WAV files are they? (16 bit, 24 bit, 44.1kHz, 48kHz....) Are these WAV files that have been exported from Audacity, or from elsewhere? My file is exported as signed 16bit WAV(microsoft) audio 44.1kHz using Audacity 1.3.9 I just n...

I am experiencing this issue as well on Audacity 1.3.9 on Mac OSX 10.6.1. Just as the first poster said choosing the "Read uncompressed audio files directly from the original (faster)" method works just fine while "Make a copy of uncompressed audio files before editing (safer)" shows a noisy wave fo...
