I did not get such problem. I use either alsamixer or kmix and both shows same input/output level than audacity.

Low level on recording
I've got a problem with Audacity 1.2.2 on Linux (rather old I know) with a SbLive card. This problam was that I get a very low level on recording from line-in (and trying to increase the input level saturate the sound in speaker). I've found lot of posts about similar problem without any answer that...
