Re: can't record a tape

So does this mean that if I make the change in Prefs to copy that I won't have the crash problem described by Koz?

Re: can't record a tape

Thank you for that warning. I will not be tempted to Save a project; I'll stick to export so I don't have any unwanted surprises. I believe in learning from others' mistakes.

Re: can't record a tape

Right. Right. Not file; folder full of what could be orphans unless adopted by being exported.

So what happens if I Save that folder? (Can you save a folder? I do see it as an option under File.)

Re: can't record a tape

I'm not sure what I used. It was 1997 and it wasn't my computer. I have used iMovie, but only for preparing audio tracks to accompany an iPhoto slide show. And that was 3 years ago. So the editing process is familiar, but the soon-to-be vanished file unless it gets exported is a new concept for me.

Re: can't record a tape

I think I get the capture and (repeated) export (not save) now. It looks like you've described all the kinds of editing I'm likely to do in transferring my old audio tapes. And thanks for including some tips. As I was reading your descriptions of how to edit it occurred to me that it sounded pretty ...

Re: can't record a tape

Now we're in business. I can see those two meters. And I clicked on the one on the right while running the analog audio and the bouncing red bars appeared! I had to download 1.2.6 because 1.3.7 requires OS 10.4 and I have 10.3.9. So now I know how to check for levels, record, export and backup. What...

Re: can't record a tape

I'm guessing those meters are the ones mentioned in 5) of the tutorial Setting up Audacity. Strangely, I don't see them in my copy. The instructions go on to say, "If the recording level meters are not visible, go to the Interface tab of Preferences and check Enable Meter Toolbar" This option is not...

Re: can't record a tape

OK. Let me see if I get it. I record in Audacity to make a capture master. I export this as a WAV file. At that point I am done with the original capture master. I make a copy of the WAV file and put it elsewhere for safekeeping. (Does it matter if I make that backup copy from the WAV master or from...

Re: can't record a tape

You won't be surprised to learn that your instructions worked perfectly. What a relief! Now I would like to know how to cut out the dead air at the beginning and in between the two tape sides. Is this done before I export? If I have already exported and the file is still open can I do it anyway and ...

Re: can't record a tape

Cables check out. I forgot about the Sound > Input. That's what I was looking for to see if the signal was getting through. When I checked it with the radio playing I could see the meter bouncing. I had already set the Audicity Prefs to the suggested settings. I played the tape and checked the red r...
