Belated thanks, waxcylinder for the replies. I should have been more diligent in reading the tutorials. I'm so comfortable with cool edit that I hate to change, but I must.

Using Cool Edit, I used to be able to do all of the following. Can't do any with Audacity. 1. Determine the average volume/loudness of a selection. I can view the spectrum, but not the volume. 2. If I record an internet show lasting several hours, then click on the Fit Project to Width button, after a second or two, I'll get a Not Responsive message - in parenthesis, at the top of the screen, just to the right of Audacity - and things are grayed out.
