Question about Dividing a Long Recording
I'm using the word 'tracks' here to mean when you divide a long audio recording into sections (to be exported as separate files). Not as in multi-track. When cutting out a section of a recording, I am aware of the need/benefit of using Zero Crossing points at the joins. What I cannot find advice on ...

Re: 24-bit Recording Question
Thank you. I should have clarified (it was in the original post that I lost) that I don't use Audacity for recording - only for post-processing.
For recording I have a Tascam DR05, and am aiming to get a Denon DN500R.

24-bit Recording Question
I just typed a lengthy question and my browser crashed so I'm going to paraphrase it...... I record in 24-bit solely so I can enjoy the headroom. My target format is always 16-bit for CD. Most books and articles I've read suggest setting levels (on the original 24-bit master) to around -12dB for thi...

Re: Re-quantising 24-bit to 16-bit
Steve, Thanks for the reply, but the PC hardware shouldn't be an issue - I'm considering buying a standalone SD-card recorder, probably the Denon DN500R. I thought most (all?) recorded music was compressed to some extent because it is assumed that we won't be playing it back at the kind of volume th...

Re: Re-quantising 24-bit to 16-bit
Thank you for the replies. I agree perhaps 'archiving' was the wrong choice of word. I copy to CD because it's convenient, and I can't hear the difference between it and the source. And for other people I copy to CD as they mostly don't have turntables or tape decks any more - at least not as good a...

Re-quantising 24-bit to 16-bit
Hi, I do a little archiving of both records and analogue tape as a hobby. My final product is always a physical 'Red Book' CD, either for my own purposes or for friends/family who have cherished records they want copied. I am contemplating starting to record in 24-bit and then re-quantising to 16-bi...

Re: 24- to 16-bit Workflow
Brilliant, thanks for all the replies. I had overlooked the fact that I could record the 24-bit master at 44.1Khz and save re-sampling - doh! I am aware I could use a PC/laptop, but I work with computers for a living and I like to get away from them as far as possible when I'm in hobbies time :D It'...

Re: 24- to 16-bit Workflow
Thank you DVDdoug for taking the time to reply. I understand all that you've said. If I buy a new recorder, is there any advantage at all in mastering at a sample frequency that's an exact multiple of the desired final format (88.2 down to 44.1) or could I master at 96Khz just as easily? Just touchi...

24- to 16-bit Workflow
Sorry if a noobie question, but I could not find this already answered anywhere. I archive analogue LPs and tapes to CD. For many years I've used a CD recorder (part of my hifi rack), so I'm going directly to CD format (16-bit). I sometimes use Audacity later to cut out gaps and insert track breaks,...
