If anyone's interested, I'll share a discovery. 1. Launch Audacity. 2. All the sound disappears. 3. In the toolbar "RECORDING DEVICE" (!) choose
SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]: p16v (hw:0,4). 4. The sound appears. Then you can specify any device for recording. The sound does not go away.

I found my old Audigy2 and the problem appeared again. On the Audigy SE has no such problem.
