Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
THANK YOU! That jumping away thing drives me nuts. (I also have the problem with an ergonomic keyboard that has a "home" key too close to the backspace -- and when I go to delete a little click or something, I bump the wrong key and the danged thing jumps the start of the file. And I was u...

Good to know. I'll keep that better in mind if I decide to start recording directly into Audacity.kozikowski wrote:Yes, the -96 setting can be useful for measurements below 60 such as noises. However, it makes hitting -6 during a live performance more difficult. The -60 setting is better for that.

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
I don't know what the Nagra's metering system was called, I just know that you watched the little needle bounce up and down, and there was a red part at the top of scale. (Which, frankly, all tape recorders I've used had something similar -- I think even my little cassette recorder had one that boun...

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
Ah, and I just realized that I had been silently reading this thread, and had talked on another thread somewhere. I had thought I was following up, but in actuality, I just jumped in.
Sorry for the confusion!

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
That person who had no idea what to do -- the OP -- is a different person: "jadeseef." I came in partway through because the overall question is one I needed info on. I'm what you might call a sophomore -- a "wise fool" who has picked up a lot of knowledge over the years, but als...

Re: Exporting Track With Audio & Music To MP3??
I don't know the correct answer, but when I put music in my podcast, I convert it down to mono. (I end up with a mono narration track and a mono music track, and sometimes a third mono sound effects track.) When I export to mp3, it's all one mono track. I would assume, if I wanted to go the other wa...

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
It's the same with jpegs in image production: Don't work in jpeg, work in psd. (Even if your client gives you a jpeg to start -- convert it, work on it as a psd file, and export it back to jpeg only at the end.) I tend to record in WAV, edit in AUP and at the end, export a mp3 when it's needed. I no...

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
Oh, and re the question of being able to keep a voice up through a novel: that's why I'm doing a weekly podcast. I've been doing a novella for the past six weeks, and I find that I've been glad of a technical excuse to redo it now and then, just because I felt the performance aspect went flat. That ...

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
Thanks! Yes, I believe I actually normalized down lower than -3 because I'd read something about the MP3 shifting it. (Also, I normalized on the whole file, and I think there were some louder parts later.) I don't record in Audacity: I have a Sony PCM-M10 digital recorder so I can get away from the ...

Re: how to get it between -23db and -18db for ACX standard
Okay, I got my mic, I have my closet studio set up (although I have plans for improving it). I processed this in Audacity with a small amount of noise reduction (about 5db) and light compression and normalization. I left breaths in because it sounds more natural to me, but I did reduce the amplifica...
