Re: Mystery Static

Thanks for asking the questions! -- Mic I didn't know there's a knockoff RE20! Well I sure hope this one is the real one: http://www.zzounds.com/item--ELVRE20 (I got the one without the shock-mount, partly because the stand that comes with it isn't rated for a mic that heavy. Also, I already built a...

Re: Mystery Static

Thanks for your interest. I will explain what I assume are the relevant parts of my setup, but please let me know if more details would be useful. It's a new RE20 mic, XLR plugged into a M-audio Omni-Studio, which itself plugs into a Delta 66 sound card. Then there's the computer... well, I could li...

Mystery Static

Hello, I recorded a bunch of tracks this weekend, and in some of the tracks there is an unwanted static crackling whenever the actor speaks. It seems similar to clipping, but I was recording safely low (-12db at the very maximum). Some tracks are effected, and some are not. I did not change anything...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Very interesting treatment of the bass issue! I think you amplified with a level of -7 (to give you room to work with), then applied the eq. I tried to imitate it (still working on my ear!), and ended up with something that looked like this: http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~breslin/basseq.JPG It still s...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Ah, that makes very good sense, thank you. Like a typical beginner, I will imagine mysteries in simple things. For example, I was leery of raising amplification towards the clip level, lowering it again, raising it again, lowering again... I imagined that some frequencies would be clipped out anyhow...

Oh dear oh dear. I don't even know what a "left-to-right relationship" is. I really need to get some proper training in this field! Well, I'll pick up as fast as I can.

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Of course, you're right about the beginning of the voice being too low. I backed off the amplification a bit, at the very end of my process when I was checking that the total mix was not clipping. Of course, the individual tracks did not clip, but sometimes they made a combined effort to reach into ...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Thanks again Koz. I have the final version to present: http://www.buffalo.edu/~breslin/intro_speech.ogg It has a few innovations from the previous versions. First, I panned the voice slightly to one side, the music slightly to the other. This created a great separation between voice and music. It's ...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Thank you! I have now leaned more heavily on the dynamic compressor, and here is the result: http://www.buffalo.edu/~breslin/intro_speech.ogg It sounds better! I think I'm ready to submit the project. (Deadline: midnight today (EST).) I tried the echo, but it seemed like either it was too low to be ...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

I know what you mean. No, the actor was not gesticulating. He is more experienced as a stage actor and director (very solid, impressive resume, etc.), and a little nervous in front of the mic the first two takes. But very sharp guy. I could have directed him better -- especially, don't go into the r...
