Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Just to finish up.

Thanks, Gale, for noticing my thread and for your input.
I've kinda moved on after switching to Cool Edit Pro. My "funtime" is limited and checking everything out was taking up too much of it :-(

I am using the latest EMU drivers when I record.

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Field as many outstanding inquiries as I can remember: I'm now using Audacity 1.3.7 on a Vista Dell laptop. My internal soundcard records on CEP at 24bit, Audacity (1.2.6) gives me 16bit. I must confess that I am having trouble figuring out how to export in 24- or 32bit in 1.3.7. It defaults to 16bi...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Thunderstick: yes those samples look fine. Steve: I am using the latest drivers from Emu. Also, I upgraded to the latest BEtA version od Audacity, and now I can't even select the Emu as a recording device. Ugh! Additionally, it makes me have the playback device the same as the recording device. As f...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Well, Audacity is free. AND I've already ripped quite a few items with Audacity that are 16bit and need to be re-ripped for my own sake if nothing else.

This one was produced with MME: MME FILE

This one was produced with DirectSound: Direct Sound FILE

I (very) anxiously await your test results ;)
They both look fine to me. And yes, I'm jealous. Could you tell us what your settings are?

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Thunderstick: I checked out your Pretzel Logic rip and it looks OK (maybe some DC offset?), but I can only be sure if I could see a wav snippet that's been un-altered. You used Click Repair on that, and I don;t know if that affects my method (Mitiok's method!) or not. You can send yourself a sample ...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Here's an experiment that may cast some light on the question: Record something in CEP and save it as 32 bit. Then open that file in Audacity and Export it as a 32 bit WAV. Now open it up again in CEP and see if it looks any different from the original CEP recording. If your original CEP recording ...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Thanks for responding, stf. My soundcard is an Emu 0202 and is 24bit capable. http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/0202-USB-EN.pdf I am recording 96kHz at 32bit float. I am saving at the same. When I open that wave in Cool Edit Pro and do as I describe above, the samples fall right on the 16bit ...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit

Sorta old news. I think the format modules got away from the developers. I created a modest sound file in one of the newer Audacity test builds that arrives as 16, 24, or 32 depending on which software packages opens it. The Mac version has always had 24-bit troubles, and I wouldn't be shocked to l...
