I was using Audacity 2.03 on Windows XP, and then I installed Audacity 2.04 over it. I downloaded it from Sourceforge. But, yikes, I just followed your advice to check under Help/About Audacity for the version, and Surprise! It's showing me Audacity 1.3.14 Beta! I don't know how that took over, but ...

No, I opened a project with a 44.1 file and then pulled in a file at 48. On its own track, it showed in the box at the left that it was 48, and then when I pulled it onto the 44.1 track, it played at 44.1 and sounded veeerrrry slooow. After that I looked at the default setting, and it showed me 44.1...

I delighted in the automatic sampling rate conversion in Audacity 2.03 - it meant if I opened the project with a file in 44.1 MHz and pulled in a file at 48 MHz, the file at 48 would automatically convert to 44.1 and play at the proper speed if I pulled it into a 44.1 track.
