First, you must get the VST Bridge here:
http://audacityteam.org/vst/
Install it into your Audacity Plug-Ins directory as per the instructions, then install your VST plug ins in the same directory.
My Nyquist and LADSPA plugins work great also.

More Free VST Plug-ins.
I needed an effects filter yesterday, and I found this site which had the effect I needed (and it worked too).
Lots of FREE VST candy here:

Re: 1.3.6 Effects list
I had the same problem a while back. For me, it was the "CleanSpeech" user interface that was clicked in the preference panel. Check to make sure that "CleanSpeech" is unclicked. Edit > Preferences > Interface Tab. At the bottom is the check box for the CleanSpeech user interface. CleanSpeech is ext...

Re: Can't adjust input volume
I find that if I adjust the output volume level of the device I am recording from in the Volume Control Panel instead of the input level, it controls the recording volume level in Audacity.

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
I do some podcasting and I tried "cleanspeech" on an mp3 podcast file. It is great, essentially a macro that applies a number of preset filters to clean up podcast type files. It works great and saves me the time of having to apply filters manually.
Great stuff.
Great stuff.

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
I finally found out what was happening. I had to access "preferences" > interface and unclick "CleanSpeech Mode" at the bottom. It all works now.
I just have to find out what CleanSpeech really does.
It's playtime folks!

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
Oddly enough, all of the plug ins show up in 1.2, just not 1.3, even though they were all installed in their respective plug-in directories.
Audacity 1.2:
C:Program FilesAudacityPlug-Ins
Audacity 1.3:
C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)Plug-Ins
Wierd . . .

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
the plugins are in C: > Program Files > Audacity > Plugins That could be the problem - I don't think that is the default directory for Audacity 1.3.6 It should be something like: C: Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)Plug-Ins I tried that installation (default values) and that doesn't work eit...

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
All I'm getting under the menu item "Effects" are
Amplifier > Normalize
Utility > Fade In
Fade Out
Noise Removal
Normalize
Truncate Silence
Leveller . . .
No Unsorted group, just the default stuff, even though the plug-in folder is full of effects.

Re: Effects Plug-Ins not showing up.
FYI, the nyquist effects don't show up either. Both LADSPA and NYQUIST are supposed to have built-in support in Audacity.
