I tried the Sound & Recording Devices settings but can't fix it.
However you've sent me in the right direction as it definitely is the computer, not Audacity so I've gone to the Windows forum for further advice.

Downloaded Audacity OK to new, decent performance laptop (Pentium i5, 8GB memory). Recording signal is there, but 'pulse'-like, similar to a mic that cuts out, but in a regular pattern.
