Thanks. I understood my problem - the track area was not highlighted I had to click the region just below the seek numbers and above where the position would change, thus highlighting the track between yellow bars.

For me in Edit>Preferences>Playback, changing the Short Period setting from 1 second to another value does not seem to have any effect. I tried changing it to 100 seconds but it still only moves by the same small increment. And this increment seems to vary based on the zoom - if I am zoomed in very ...
