Problem appears to be resolved---it was the gain level knob, which is now set on minus or zero. I wonder if this
is normal and if it affects the quality of the recording----hard to tell with old vinyl.
Anyway, thanks for your helpful suggestions.

Everything worked fine with the old Windows XP set-up.....................

dB levels past 0, sound distorted

In Windows 7 my turntable recording levels are way too high, with distortion coming through speakers.
Settings in Sound---microphone, speakers, etc---appear correct. What setting in Windows or
Audacity still could be incorrect?
