Why would you want to record your audio to a rewrite???? If its worth recording burn it to a good quality CD and look after it. I would suggest you first try a mike in your setup and see if that working properly. When you know that thats is OK, then move to your guitar. Because your guitar lead will be a mono lead the adapter should be mono as well

It could be anything including the laptop!!!! Have you considered a backup recording as in a good portable tape recorder or video camera???
