I too have the same problem. I am using an imac i5 2.7, 16gb ram, 1tb HD, osx 10.6.8. Audacity version 1.3.13-beta I use audacity to import long field recordings (usually >3 hours long) then export it to a format of my choosing- usually wav, mp3.
