I'm running Windows XP SP3.
My Windows XP CD is an original Microsoft Windows XP CD. And there are no scratches on it...
The device is designed for Windows XP. So where is the problem? It's curious...

The recorded sound sounds like the picture shows ;) clipped! Yes the device is class-compliant. I deinstalled the M-Audio drivers and tried the Windows drivers: Same problem ;) By the way: Under Linux everything workds fine (there I use Audacity too). So the device must be intact. The windows Sound recorder works... but with the same problem ;) I used a driver from 2004 before. Recently it was the latest driver. On 22.08.2008 a new driver was released and I installed it but I haven't seen any effect to the problem... I haven't seen any improvement that comes with the new driv...

I contacted the M-Audio support and they told me to buy an active usb hub for frictionless current supply.
I did that, but the problem is still the same...

Isn't the gain control a line-in control? Look at the picture of my soundcard...
But don't you have the probleme that you amplify the recorded noise when you normalise your recording...?

It can not be a hardware problem, because under linux everything works well with absolutely the same set...
