Hmmm....well, just not worth it to me at this point to buy an SPL for $50 or so to test fans that will cost me less than $20. so I guess I'll just buy, plug em in and use my ears to see if there is a difference.
Thanks anyway for taking to time to look at this crazy idea.

Comparing SPL or measuring SPL with Audacity?
I understand a little bit about sound measurements, for example I know that 20db is roughly twice as loud as 10db. It is basically a log scale (maybe not exactly but that is how I look at it.) Ok. So with that said here is what I'm trying to do, with Audacity if possible. My office has a tower serve...

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
Wish I had that option to de-select Audio Enhancements but I don't.

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
Agree completely about the freecorder (v4) issue and all the "malware". I don't want or need all that crud. Which is why I opened this thread in the first place. Yes, same version of Audacity for both laptops. Old one worked great but I had to turn it back in to get a newer, "better&q...

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
It's from Rhapsody. The exact title is: "Rule Britannia", HMS Royal Marines Band, Wartime Memories is the album. I was wanting a snippet for our vacation video. Actually I do that a lot, take snippets of songs, for our vacation vids. Sometimes I just rip the whole song from the CD or DVD a...

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
Attached are recordings with EVERYTHING set to the defaults, which is basically no equalizing in or out. Audacity recording sounds even worse than before but the freecorder still sounds pretty good. I don't know where to go from here. Guess I'll just use freecorder for catching snippets off the web ...

DOH! (forehead slap)
Yes, it does now. Geez what was I thinking? Right, so I'll remove effects this evening and give it another whirl.

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
Finally found it. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any type of effects that are applied during recording. There is Noise cancellation and/or Acoustic Echo cancellation. Both are unchecked. Playback does have a bit of a cheesy equalizer but both recordings are played through that and through ...

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
Unfortunately work has intruded onto the really important stuff. I should be able to look into in tonight. As for the original. Streamed via Rhapsody in both instances. So I would record one. Shutdown Rhapsody. Start Rhapsody, record the second. Everything is playing through my "NATA Multimedia...

Re: Bad sound using Stereo Mix
normalizing helped but the "Freecorder clip" still sounds the closest to the original--at least to my ears. Wish I could figure out how or if I should update the IDT HD driver. Oh, well. At least I have the freecorder and can edit those in Audacity.
