I am experiencing corrupt audacity recordings. Fragments of the recording are always corrupt. Why is this?

I recently backed up my audacity sound files to a portable HDD. I since then formatted the system the recording was made on. Now, whenever I try and open the audacity file on HDD, I cannot.
