I was finally able to get stereo mix working again by switching my "playback" from USB-headset to external speakers connected directly to the computer sound jack. I did not realize that the "playback" option also had an affect on the recording since I certainly had no problems he...

You are absolutely right...Installing the service pak does require you to re-enable stereo mix under the sound recording settings which I did as mentioned in my first post (stereo mix is enabled). There has to be something else going on or perhaps another setting somewhere I haven't discovered yet.
