P.P.S. But how strange that Safari 5.0.3 will play an mp3 uploaded via a much older version of Safari but will not play an mp3 uploaded using Firefox.

Both files play fine here. The main difference that I can see is that the one that you say does not play is a mono file, whereas the other one is stereo, but that should not make a difference as to whether it plays or not, and as I said, they both play fine on my computer. I used Audacity to edit down a podcast from the radio, and when I posted the resultant mp3 file in my webspace to link to it on my website, it refuses to play.
