I haven't purchased a new mic yet, but I feel that you are correct. The mic that I have attempted to use is about 20 years old.

I was recording at church, when at the end of the sermon, instead of stopping the recording I unplugged the mic input. I immediately plugged the mic back in and tried to save the file. I could not do anything, everything was grayed out. I looked in the data file, and the files were there so I closed...

After reviewing 'microphone boost' I found that I could increase the db from 0 to 20 to 40. It was set from the factory at 20db. After increasing to 40db, the hissing during playback was terrible. Thanks for the input.

After reading all the forums I can find, I still can not increase the recording volume. When playing back I have to turn the volume up all the way but I still can hardly hear.
