I had same problem with hp presario cq, windows 7. Fixed it by disabling built in microphone, set stereo mix as default, speakers as normal (not headphones), also unchecked the Listen box. I use Windows 7. (I never had this problem with XP.) I wish I had $1 for every time I have read that.
