I presume that you were trying to record something into a project that already contained one or more tracks, and when you pressed the record button, that message popped up instead of recording?
If that's the case, then most likely what happened is that the recording stalled for some reason, so a very short or zero length track was produced.

Which version of Audacity are you using?
What operating system are you using?
What were you trying to record?
Are you trying to make an overdub recording?
What settings are selected in the device toolbar?
Is "Software Playthrough" enabled in the "Transport" menu? (normally it should be off / not selected).
