MP3 Patent Expiration

Audacity has always had a separate mp3 encoder due to patent issues. However, it was in the news recently that mp3 patents are expiring, and it seems like the majority of relevant patents have already expired this year. The wiki also claims that the last mp3 patents (will)/expire in 2017: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/MP3#Legal_Issues

Has there been any consideration of adding native mp3 encoding support to audacity?

It has been considered but there are aspects to this that mean we are not ready yet to include native MP3 encoding.

I hope it will happen when those issues are resolved.
