Audacity 2.1.2 Windows Vista.

#1 Open a stereo track in Audacity.
#2 Select any VST effect.
#3 Whilst VST preview is playing, split the stereo track to mono.
#4 Guaranteed crash.

This is also occurs on native Wah-Wah effect.
[ The other native effects don't permit track-splitting once the effect has been selected from the menu].

Thanks Trebor. Confirmed on Linux in Audacity 2.1.3 alpha with real-time preview effects.
I'll log this bug now.
Update: Now logged.

I'm curious: Why did you try to split the track during preview? Was it "destruction testing" or was it part of a practical use case?
(I'm thinking that the easiest fix might be to disallow split/join stereo tracks while transport is active).

Are you able to test with Audacity 2.0.6 and 2.1.0?
If you can, please do and let us know.
Thanks,
Steve

Haste : rather than stop the VST preview, then split the track, then start preview again.

Splitting is disallowed on the native effects, except Wah-Wah & Phaser.
Extending that restriction to all effects, native & plugin, seems the way to go, if the alternative is a crash.

Update: That's now been done in the development code.
