Ubuntu 16.04 - missing libavcodec.so.54?

Since upgrading to *buntu 16.04 I am unable to run Audacity:

audacity: error while loading shared libraries: libavcodec.so.54: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I can’t install that version of libavcodec:

$ sudo apt-get install libavcodec54
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libavcodec54 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package 'libavcodec54' has no installation candidate

LibAV is installed:

$ sudo apt-get install libav-tools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libav-tools is already the newest version (7:2.8.11-0ubuntu0.16.04.1).
libav-tools set to manually installed.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.

I have tried purging and re-installing Audacity to no avail. Any ideas?

Have you upgraded to the packaged version of Audacity in the 16.04 repository? Note that Audacity Team is not responsible for such packages - they are the responsibility of Canonical.

If you updated to Ubuntu 16.04 over previous Ubuntu, this is deprecated by Canonical and likely to create issues. Save your data and do a fresh overwrite install instead from the 16.04 image file.
