Audacity kills Sound after Start. (SB Audigy 2 Platinum)

System: Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 / SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]
Audacity testet: 2.0.0 from repositories and 2.0.3 from sources.
Symptom: After start from Audacity, playback sound is death in the System.
I have tried many suggestions from similar topics here from forum (especially alsa/pulseaudio topics) without success.

Has anyone any suggestion what i can try?

If your playback list is complete, try enabling the motherboard audio, instead of using only SoundBlaster. See https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/system-sound-crashes-on-audacity-start/27419/32 .

Look on the ALSA / Ubuntu forums for Linux drivers for Audigy, if you have not already done so.

Try installing Pulse Audio Volume Control (pavucontrol).

Try not using Pulse (select the hw choice for Audigy in Audacity).

There do seem to be some Forum reports of Creative sound cards working correctly with Audacity on Ubuntu; perhaps search for those topics.

However, Creative never intended their cards to be used on Linux, so they may produce issues in some applications on Linux. Does Ardour have the same issue?

Thanks Gale for your reply and your effort.

I’ve tried near every suggestion in this forum. - Without success.
I’ve already tried with or without onboard sound: The same problem.

After all there’s a running Audigy driver in ubuntu 12 and seems to work without problems. - there’s no proprietary driver available. - AFAIS.

was already installed…

I’ve tried near every options in Audacity (restarting every test, because after testing there’s no sound.)
…without success each.

The sound card working fine in ubuntu - including 4.0 sound - except this special problem. The soundcard also was running under ubuntu 10.X with audacity 1.*** (i can’t remember, what i had installed)
I used exactly this soundcard for about 5 years on audacity and linux…

No. - I’ve installed ardour today and tested. - ardour’s working fine ( but cannot open mp3’s  )
I hope, that the statement, which is taken inhttps://forum.audacityteam.org/t/system-sound-crashes-on-audacity-start/27419/32 will not get true:

Have you tried the Windows version of Audacity under WINE?

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid used Audacity 1.3.12 ( Ubuntu – Error ) . There were extensive mixer changes in 1.3.13 so it is conceivable that 1.3.12 had no problem but 1.3.13 and later does.

So if you have not already, you could try installing the 1.3.12-2 Audacity package (or compiling the 1.3.12 tarball ( http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-minsrc-1.3.12-beta.tar.bz2 ) and see what happens. You will probably have to downgrade some dependent libraries to earlier versions which may or may not create other issues.

Now I have tried… - Without success. - Means: the same effect.

./configure:

configure: WARNING: "Missing support in pa_mac_core.h"
configure: WARNING: "Missing support in pa_unix_oss.h"
configure: WARNING: "Missing support in portaudio.h"
configure: error: "Your version of portaudio does not include required functions"

I don’t know, but I think it’s not really a good idea to substitute portaudio with an older version in ubuntu 12…

Do you use any bluetooth devices? If not, try removing bluetooth support from your system (if I recall correctly you just need to uninstall bluez and reboot).

I think you can interchange portaudio versions freely for Audacity purposes, though building Audacity 1.3.13 or later with different portaudio versions did not stop the system sound failing for user nkent.

I have built earlier Audacity than intended for my version of Ubuntu a couple of times without any obvious detriment to system audio, but it may depend what other audio applications you have.

Gale

@steve: the suggestion was encouraging and worth a try, but did not successfull.
@gale: after all i don’t want to step back, so I want to use audacity 2.x…

After testing a lot of ideas, killing my sound system a several times - i’ve decided to kick out the Sound Card.
Meanwhile Audacity’s running well under a Sound Blaster Live and I’m happy…

thanks for your help 1k*…

OK thanks I’ve noted that the SB Live! doesn’t show this problem when used with Audacity. But I don’t know what conclusion to draw from that.
