Recording vinyl-records to hd.. How do you do it?..

Am running Centos-6 & Linux Mint-13… Or I could install & run any Linux distro necessary to record vinyl records…
Is there a best Linux OS for Audacity?..

Just acquired a new condition turntable this morning at a garage sale… an “Ion Profile LP USB TurnTable”…
I stressed for several hours trying to get this thing working…
I’m not sure if I need a preamp between the turntable and the tower…? Does anyone know?..
Does anyone know how to record vinyl to wave with an “ion-tt”…? Seems this ion-tt is for Windows and Mac only…?

A properly working ION turntable appears like a USB Sound Device to the computer. You go into the Sound Devices available to your computer and select either Generic USB Sound Device or ION Sound Device and start recording.

However,

Nobody would be shocked to find you have a dead or misbehaving turntable. The manufacturer’s design center for this turntable are to make it so cheap that it drops dead just after you transfer the last record. If somebody owned it before you, then its lifespan is complete.

If you can’t force it to work with the USB connection, you may be able to use the analog connections. Look on the bottom and see if there are two RCA connections down there and a switch. The switch is to provide “raw” cartridge signals and in that case you would need a “Phono Preamp” to take the RIAA Distortion out of the signals. The other side, whatever it’s called, to use the built-in RIAA compensation. It has to have an internal one because that’s how it provides corrected signals to the USB service.

After you get your audio cables together you need to find a Stereo Line-In on your computer. Laptops tend to have only Mic-In which is mono, not stereo, and easily damaged by high level audio signals. Consult your instructions.

Nobody is writing glowing reviews about the accuracy of the actual turntable, either. It tended to generate distortion from turntable speed and arm tracking problems.
