Trouble with editing problematic recordings

Hello. I’m a volunteer for a small non-profit organization, using Audacity to edit audio files of lectures our organization presents to the public on a regular schedule.

I need some assistance with a technical issue we’ve been having with some of our recent recordings. The problem originates during the recording process, but I’m left with trying to figure out how to improve the sound quality as best I can.

If anyone has any idea of how I can improve on the sound quality of these recordings, I’d very much appreciate hearing from you.

I’ve attached a short WAV clip from one of these recordings, to give you a better idea of what I’m talking about.

Thanks so much for any help you may be able to provide me with.

Cutting the bass frequencies helps a little …

But there’s no way of reversing the overload distortion.

Thanks so much for your help. I was guessing that the overloading on the recording might be permanent, but thought I’d ask anyway. I’ll give your recommendation a try though.
