Problem installing ffmpeg-mac-2.2.2.zip

Help for Audacity 2.x.x on Mac OS X.

ImageThis forum is for Audacity 2.x.x on Mac OS X 10.4 and later.
Please state which version of OS X you are using, the exact three-section version of Audacity from Audacity > About Audacity and whether you obtained the .dmg installer or the zip.

Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

Problem installing ffmpeg-mac-2.2.2.zip

Good afternoon,

I'm currently on a Mac OS X version 10.9.5 and using Audacity 2.1.3

I'd like to export an audio file to M4A and have:
1.downloaded 'ffmpeg-mac-2.2.2.zip'
2.extracted the files onto a recognisable file on my desktop
3.opened Preferences and Library
4.browsed and found the file
5.selected 'libavcodec.55.dylib' and opened it
BUT when I go back to try to export, the same reconfiguration message appears.

What can I do?

Best

Why are you using the ZIP instead of the DMG?

OK, first, yes it does. Attached m4a pink noise sound file from an almost identical machine.

5.selected 'libavcodec.55.dylib' and opened it

I don't remember that step at all. My install looks like this.

I'm not the installer whiz, but somehow I did this over four different computers and it worked every time. Which instructions did you follow? Typically, the Lame software is the magic one, the software you need to make an MP3 sound file.

Following up on my earlier post. If you use the DMG installer, it will install the FFmpeg files in

/Library/Application Support/audacity/libs

which is where Audacity automatically looks for the files.

You should only use the ZIP file if the DMG install fails. When using the ZIP file, you need to install all of the .dylib files into the same folder somewhere.

Also note that, in the instructions for manually locating the FFmpeg files through the Directory Preferences in Audacity, you need to select "libavformat.55.dylib", not "libavcodec.55.dylib" as you noted in your post. Finally, after you have located and opened libavformat.55.dylib, that Audacity Devices Preferences shows the FFmpeg version number instead of "FFmpeg library not found".

I still don't remember that step. My files are all in

/Library/Application Support/audacity/libs

and I didn't go looking for the right library. They're all in there.

I missed the step where I have to tell Audacity to go looking for them. As far as I can tell, they just showed up and started working.

These always made me crazy. Isn't this supposed to say "I found FFMpeg here." "Want to look for another one?"

It's in the manual at Locating the FFmpeg library manually.

You've never seen that step because your FFmpeg libraries are in the standard location and Audacity automatically detects them
